Can you believe it? One year ago, Jeff Swesky and I set out to start something special. We garnered a lot of help from people like Tovah Janovsky and Christine Speno and others. The idea was to set up a venue where writers and other creative folk could present their work to a live audience.
We began very humbly with a total of 20 people showing up in May 2013, 18 of which were readers. Yes, we were our own audience! lol! Then in June, 42 people showed up, which meant our audience outnumbered our presenters. In July, we almost hit 70 people. That was 3 times as many in the audience as we had presenting.
Yes, I used the word “presenting” in that last paragraph because we get more than just writers at The Inspired Mic. Dima Zales used his “mentalist” expertise to amaze us, Mel Melvin and Tom Sisti performed their special brands of magic, we’ve had singers, actors, motivational speakers and painters. In essence, if the work is creative and can be delivered from a stage with a mic, we bring it!
Our one year anniversary stands as a special milestone. Both Jeff and Carol Fisher, owners of the BeachHouse Beanery (our gracious hosts for the event) have read at The Inspired Mic. In fact, on our one year anniversary, Carol will present again! I have maintained that this event is primarily for the presenters to 1) overcome their fear of presenting their material, 2) polish their presentation capabilities, and 3) learn how to market their work to people they do not know.
That last item, marketing, is every writer’s bane. As we move forward in our second year, we are working to add things like audio recording of the event, and eventually video. These recordings can be HUGE marketing tools. I am quite anxious to get these items in place because I believe the recordings will help not just with marketing, but also the presentation and possibly even the creation of material.
Lastly, we are asking that people wishing to attend the event, buy their tickets in advance. There are a number of reasons for this. Primarily, we need to know how many will be at the event so staffing at the Beanery can be projected adequately so that food service is handled efficiently. Also, as we saw in April, we need to know in case we have a rain date. If we have not sold many tickets, we can move indoors. If we have, we can use our “Rain Date” which is always the next Tuesday. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at Change Jar Books, Flagler Beach Gift Shop, and The BeachHouse Beanery, all in Flagler Beach.
Tickets may also be purchased online at GoWriteandYouWontGoWrong.com There is a fifty cent online service fee to cover the cost of credit card transactions. A ticket give you more than simply admittance into the event, you also get two drinks (beer, wine, sodas, teas, etc) and you are also entered into a raffle at the end of the night.
Please come out and help us celebrate our One Year Anniversary on May 20, 2014. This will be a wonderful night!!!
